Microsoft Cuts 9,000 Jobs, Xbox and Gaming Divisions Hit Hard
Microsoft has announced a significant reduction of 9,000 employees, with the Xbox and gaming divisions bearing the brunt of the layoffs. The restructuring includes game cancellations and studio closures, such as Rare’s Everwild and The Initiative. This MOVE follows Microsoft’s $69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard, signaling a strategic pivot to streamline operations amid a rapidly evolving gaming landscape.
Phil Spencer, CEO of Microsoft Gaming, described the layoffs as a necessary step to ensure future growth. Teams across Europe and the U.S. have been affected, including King’s Stockholm division, which lost 10% of its workforce. Despite record profits, Microsoft insists these cuts are essential to maintaining competitiveness.
